Around Tokyo
Tokyo is a big city. It has over 11,000,000 people in its 23 wards. As you
travel from Narita (where Tokyo International Airport is located) to downtown Tokyo, you
will see many popular areas of the city, such as Ueno, Akihabara, and Shinjuku.. On this
page, let's get off the train and enjoy some of the sights of downtown Tokyo.

Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office
This is the Tokyo Metropolitan Government office building. The seat of the Metropolitan
Gavernment moved here from near Tokyo Station a few years ago. Since then, Shinjuku has
came to be considered the city center of Tokyo. There are many skyscrapers in this area.
They are home to big companies, hotels, and stores. At night it has less population than
in the daytime. Because the price of land is very expensive, not so many can live there. |
Shinjuku
At Shinjuku station we can see many people (over 1,530,000 ) a day, especially during
the morning and evening rush hours. Many trains, such as the Yamanote, Chuo, Keio, and
Odakyu lines, and also subways come together here. The trains come into the platform and
leave at 30-second intervals, so around the station there are many department stores, and
they are crowded with many people every day. |

 |
Many young girls and boys come to this area to have fun. You can enjoy
disco dancing, karaoke, billiards, bowling, video games, pachinko (Japanese pinball),
bars, and so on. You can eat every kind of food around here. Many restaurants are very
crowded with many people all day long. It is a fantastic and exciting area of the city, so
we say Shinjuku never sleeps. |
Please visit Shinjuku when you come to Tokyo. You can find shops selling
electronics, shoes ,books, clothes - you name it. But please keep your mind on your
finances, or you may spend too much! |

Tokyo Waterfront
This is a photograph of the Sumida River. Recently many different buildings have been
constructed on this riverside and on the waterfront of the Tokyo Bay area. Several
development plans and remarkable projects are underway in Tokyo. Tokyo has many problems
due to concentration of business and government functions, long commuting times, and a
rise in land prices. The waterfront plan has been said to be one solution to these issues.
